This month we'd like to introduce you to Megan Meaux, Special Events Manager for The Woodlands Township
Tell us your story? Why did you become a race director?
My career in Special Events began 14 years ago when I started working for our local Parks and Rec Department in college. I was somehow lucky enough to find a job back home in The Woodlands in a different role, but transitioned into my current position as Special Events Manager for The Woodlands Township in 2015. My division is responsible
for numerous community-wide events, which also include our race series. Races are obviously much different than the special events I was used to, and require a completely unique skillset that took some time for me to acquire! While being a Race Director is essentially built into my job, it has provided me with valuable and very rewarding experiences.
What do you love about your experiences as a race director? What have been your biggest challenges?
I think most would agree that the weeks leading up to and Race Day can be chaos and sometimes grueling. It is a thankless job at times, but the best part about it for me is seeing our participants set a goal and achieve it. Our numbers are not near what they were 5-7 years ago, so we have had to stay creative with engaging our existing athletes and new potential participants.
How do you feel your expertise in the field sets you apart from other race directors?
My years in special events prior to overseeing our races certainly prepared me for most of what comes with producing an endurance event. Our races are best known for being highly organized and very beginner-friendly, which I feel we work very hard to maintain. My division is the core group that is directly behind these races, and we are all extremely detail oriented in different aspects.
Tell us about a crazy/funny/"you would never believe this happened"/story at one of your events!
Thankfully, we have not had anything happen that was beyond repair! One of the best memories for me to date has been a participant showing up the morning of our triathlon and asking what he was supposed to do first... Guess he missed the 83 Race Day prep emails we sent out before. But he still finished!
As a race director, what is your #1 goal?
For our participants to have a safe, enjoyable and organized race! Also for them to achieve whatever goal they had set for themselves - Even if it is just finishing.
What are you most proud of as a race director?
The reputation our races have built for themselves, even though this was well in place before I transitioned into the role. It has been rewarding to see the integrity of our races remain through each of us who have been fortunate enough to be in the position.
Do you have any advice for others venturing into race directing?
Be prepared for your plans to not go according to plan :-) While the small details are very important, keep an eye on the bigger picture at all times. Stay flexible and be able to adjust to anything on the fly.
