Meet Julie Rydell - Race Director of the Month

This month we'd like to introduce you to Julie Rydell, Race Director for Good Life Taylor

Tell us your story?  Why did you become a race director?

Good Life Taylor 5K started 10 years ago as a way to promote healthy family outdoors activities while raising funds for community projects.

What do you love about your experiences as a race director?  What have been your biggest challenges?

We are the oldest, continuously held 5k in our part of the county and the only on the road race held in town. Since we have been hosting this event for 10 years, we have a really good system & Athlete Guild helps us provide a very professional experience for our runners. Each year our event grows and we are known for hosting a fun event. Fortunately, the weather is really our greatest unknown, but we don't sweat it.

How do you feel your expertise in the field sets you apart from other race directors?

I have a background in graphic design and project management which helps immensely, but it is my teammates who are the best. I could not do it without them and I value them so very, very much.

Tell us about a crazy/funny/"you would never believe this happened"/story at one of your events!

One year our course volunteer ran out of gas while putting out cones before the race and another year our winner one the whole thing while pushing a 6 year old in a jogging stroller and held the record for 3 years! (17:39)

As a race director, what is your #1 goal?

For our participants to have the best experience so that they want to return next year and bring friends!

What are you most proud of as a race director?

I love to see our event grown and I have met some really cool people since we started this event. People look forward to our event and I love feedback from running enthusiasts.

Do you have any advice for others venturing into race directing?

Listen to input and implement best practices. We have the attitude that this year's event is getting us ready for next year's race. If we make it a great race this year, then people will want to return.
